Capacity building worksop on Social Accountability Tools and Mechanisms- Elgeyo Marakwet County

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA Kenya) under the Futures Programme held a capacity building workshop on Social Accountability Tools and Mechanisms for Executive Officers of Elgeyo Marakwet County from 27th to 29th September 2017. The objective of the workshop was to introduce participants to social accountability tools and mechanisms and their relevance to better service delivery under devolved governance, and contribute to opening spaces for engagement between CSOs and Government Officers. Participants included County Secretary, Directors, Heads of Departments, Administrators including Sub-County Administrators, budget officers, planning officers, and members of the County Complaints and Compliments Committee. Key outcomes of the workshop included: participants appreciated that training would contribute to the realization of County Government commitments under the Open Government Partnership (OGP) which the County Government is part of, and commitment by the County Government to engagement with CSOs undertaking social accountability initiatives in the County. The activity is one among several that aim at capacity building of County staff, County based CSOs and citizens to effectively engage in devolved governance processes in the Uraia Trust funded project titled: Promoting Social Economic Rights through Participatory and Accountable Governance part of a wider Uraia Trust project Rooting Democracy in Kenya through an informed citizenry, Phase II.
