Public Forum on Emerging Health Sector Financing Trends: Leasing of Medical Equipment Project

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA – Kenya) held a Public Forum on Emerging Health Sector Financing Trends: Leasing of medical equipment project on Thursday 25th, October 2018 at the Sarova Stanley Hotel, Nairobi. The objective of the meeting was to discuss and demystify the MES project for a more informed public discourse. The meeting was also aimed at enhancing understanding of the emerging health financing alternatives but also to promote transparency and accountability in the sector.
Speaking during the meeting, Hon. Esther Karapiyio Somoire, County Executive Committee Member in Charge of Health Services in Kajiado County acknowledged that there have been delays in operationalization of equipment in the county due to challenges in human resource. The renal unit for Kajiado was commissioned this year yet it was delivered two years ago this is because we had not received a renal nurse despite advertising the position, and it took more than a year for the county to train nurses, in addition to that they had to train a physician and other medical officers to manage the unit, said Somoire.
Speaking during the same event, Mr. Edward Mwagore, Project Manager at Philips said that ICU bed requires six nurses per shift running three shifts per day each allocated to a bed, this results in at least 36 nurses in the ICU unit, yet there are very few nurses who are trained in intensive care. Specialization of doctors is remains a challenge as most doctors are in based in Nairobi and yet there are places that face deficits. For example, Thika level five hospital has one Cuban doctor running the ICU, added Mwagore.
Also present during the meeting was; Mr. Meshack Ndolo, Senior Health Systems Advisor at the Council of Governors. The media, representatives from CSOs and the public also attended the meeting.
