Developing countries face a tremendous challenge when it comes to issues of bioprospecting and economic development. There often lacks strong intellectual property protection for their traditional knowledge and genetic resources. This has lead to a devastating loss of biodiversity as unauthorized bioprospecting continues to the detriment of the local communities and the national economies. The linkages between bioprospecting and intellectual property have often gone unnoticed.
